Ways of Environmentally Disposing of Waste

Disposing of waste in a manner that does not harm the environment remains a critical issue for many communities, industries and government offices. Finding an appropriate and environmentally friendly method of waste disposal requires attention to detail and research into the potential consequences of proposed methods. Numerous methods exist, but each method has its own unique strengths and weaknesses.
Landfills
Landfills, which use empty space to bury waste, are a common method of waste disposal. This option works for basic waste such as household trash. A well-designed and well-managed landfill provides an environmentally neutral solution to waste management. However, poorly managed or badly designed landfills generate several problems for the environment, ranging from litter escaping the landfill to improper or inadequate disposal of hazardous waste.
Incineration
Incineration refers to reducing solid waste to a smaller volume by burning it in furnaces or other high-temperature systems. When incinerated, waste is reduced to ash, heat, steam and gas. In some cases, the output of incineration is recycled into the community in the form of alternate energy. While this method is practical for hazardous materials, such as biological and medical waste, environmental concerns arise around pollutant emissions into the air.
Energy Recovery
Energy recovery methods are the most environmentally friendly of the three main types of waste management. By this method, waste is used as an input to many types of energy recovery. In some cases, waste is turned into a direct combustion fuel. Processing waste transforms it into a fuel source for alternate energies, such as boilers, to generate steam or electricity.
While many methods of environmentally friendly waste management exist, the three listed are the most frequently used, especially by industries or communities. As science and environmental impact knowledge grows, additional methods of waste management may emerge. Knowing the possible impacts of waste disposal methods is the key to determining the best solution for waste management.
