Environmental Waste Issues

Today, the highest standard of living of any previous generation is enjoyed through various technological advances. However, with the benefits and luxuries come many environmental waste issues, including those that follow.
Time and labor saving products
It is often said that there is better living through chemistry, and this is true to an extent. Even the everyday chore of cleaning a house is lessened by using an assortment of chemical cleaners. Modern laundry soaps eliminate the necessity of scrubbing by hand, and the use of toilet bowl additives eliminate unsightly stains. These products, when used, enter the water system and cause considerable damage. Phosphates in the laundry products cause algae to grow in unwanted areas, and toilet bowl cleaners contaminate the water table.
The food Industry
Chemicals are used by industry on a much larger scale than by individuals. Farmers have found that profits increase by use of fertilizers, as crops grow faster and fuller, and that profits increase again as pests are controlled that attack the crops. Extensive use of fertilizers and pesticides by the food industry severely affect the water supply.
Manufacturing
Driving by the industrial area of any large city clearly shows the smoke and pollution entering the air. It is common knowledge that breathing is affected by smog and smoke, and that those with allergies and asthma should avoid areas with poor air quality. Unfortunately, the cost of producing goods cleanly is prohibitive, and the frequent solution is to move the dirty manufacturing elsewhere, where it is not noticed or people lack the ability to prevent it. Third world countries are the homes of dirty manufacturing, and although local climates improve by this strategy, the world as a whole continues to suffer.
In order for future generations to enjoy the same quality of life that is presently enjoyed, it is necessary to look at the current practices that create environmental wastes, and for the world as a while to improve wherever possible.
